Shanghai International Port Group or SIPG signed on 28 May 2010 a contract to achieve an interest of 25 % in the container terminal of APM Terminals Zeebrugge at the Albert II dock. The letter of intent which was concluded in September 2006 and which was put out of the fridge in 2009 is taking shape. The decision of SIPG is quite extraordinary because this investment constitutes the first foreign investment of Shanghai Ports.
This decision is crucial to Zeebrugge, all the more since the coastal port is setting out an Asia strategy. Today Zeebrugge offers no less than 14 deepsea container services to the Far East. The anchorage of SIPG in Zeebrugge will probably increase the numer of liner services.
