Zeebrugge is a leading intra-European roll-on/roll-off port. It offers about 20 freight services chiefly to the British islands, but also increasingly to Scandinavia, the Baltic region and Southern Europe. The cargo consist of trucks, (unaccompanied) trailers and roro containers, project cargo and new cars. In this last segment, Zeebrugge is the global market leader.
The roll-on/roll-off traffic considerably decreased in 2002 due to the discontination of the P&O services to Dover and Felixstowe. In 2008 roro traffic from and to Great Britain decreased as result of the severe economic crisis in the United Kingdom.
