- on the coast of the North sea, the busiest sea in the world;
- at the centre of other North Sea ports in France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany;
- on the axis of maritime traffic between the Continent and Great Britain;
- on the southern border of the delta of the three main rivers in the area: the Scheldt, the Maas and the Rhine, which are the main access routes to Western Europe by sea;
- close to the industrialised centre and big cities of the European continent.
